How To: Install 2006-2008 radio into 2003-2005 Mazda 6

UPDATE 8/1/17:
Due to Photobucket's brilliant recent change in policy for hosting pictures, here is a link to the pics:
Mazda 6 Radio Swap Pictures

My main goal was to replace my LCD info screen ($380 from dealer) that was slowly dying, but they have been hard to find at junkyards and online, so I decided to swap it out with the newer model in the 2006-2008 Mazda 6 cars which are easier to find.  However, if you do this, you'll also need to swap out the stereo with the newer 2006-2008 as well.

PARTS:

1) 2006-2008 Radio (~$130 - eBay)
2) 2006-2008 LCD Info Display (#CA-DM4591AK) (~$60 - eBay)
3) (5) OEM Stock Radio Wire Harness (Junkyard or $7 ea. - eBay)
4) (3) Radio Wire Harness (Junkyard or $4 ea. - eBay)
5) (5) Computer Case front panel wire connectors
6)  Electrical Tape
7) Zip ties

NOTE: When you search for parts you'll need to get the equivalent of what you have installed from the factory. For example, if you have a Bose stereo, you'll need to get the newer Bose stereo system. The "Non-Bose" stereo will not plug and play into your Mazda that came with a Bose stereo from the factory and vice versa.  The CD unit does not matter however.  So, if your car has a Bose stereo with single CD player, you can use a Bose stereo with the newer MP3 6-disc CD player just fine.

3 criteria need to match with your new parts:
1) Bose or Non-Bose stereo
2) Factory Navigation or No Navigation (map storage pocket in dash)
3) Manual Climate Control or Automatic Climate Control

I also had a few parts painted to make them flow better with my 2004 interior.

TOOLS:

1) 10mm socket with extension
2) Phillips screwdriver
3) Wire Strippers
4) Wire Cutters
5) Soldering Iron (optional)

As you can see below the lcd display is starting to lose segments and can no longer read the clock.  I've followed a couple of guides to take it apart and fix it by bending the pins, but it did not fix it 100% and is only a temporary fix as it will eventually fail again over time.

Factory LCD Screen losing segments
After bending pins.  Clock is supposed to read "11:26".

A) WIRE HARNESS (optional):

If you don't want to splice into the factory wires, you can create your own wire harness, which I recommend for a few reasons:

* Gives you more room to work.   The factory harness is short and harder to work in the tight cramped car, then on a work bench.

* No damage to factory wire harness. Can easily be plugged or unplugged.

* Only costs about $45 or less.

Pin Outs:

OEM Stock Radio Wire Harness:

1) First thing is to set up the OEM Harness that plugs into the back of the radio.  I couldn't find one at a junkyard, and the one from eBay is missing 10 of the thin wires, so you need (5) of these eBay connectors so that you can remove the 2 thin wires from the other (4) and insert them into the one main connector that you'll use for your harness.

If you have trouble opening the connector to remove the wires, take it to an automotive electrical store and they should be able to do it for you in 5 min.

Here's what the finished connector should look like with all the new wires inserted:

Radio Wire Harness:

2) Next step is to set up the Radio Harness that plugs into the existing radio harness in the car. I couldn't find one at a junkyard, and the one from eBay is missing 4 of the thin wires, so you need (3) of these eBay connectors so that you can remove the thin wires from the other (2) and insert them into the one main connector that you'll use for your harness.

Use a paper clip as shown below to release the wires and insert them into the new connector:

LCD Info Display Wire Harness:

3) Next is to set up the connector that plugs into the LCD info display. I couldn't find one at a junkyard nor on eBay, so I used (5) computer connectors usually found on case fans or the front panel of a computer case.

4) Using the chart and pin outs above, connect each appropriate wire and solder if you're able.  Then tape up each connection to avoid any short circuits and use zip ties to clean up the wires.

B) INSTALLING INFO SCREEN & STEREO:

Now we're ready to put everything in the car.

Optional: Install 3.5mm Auxilary Input for $5

1) Remove the cupholders, shift plate, stereo & info display.  There are plenty of guides out there on how to do this, so I'll skip these steps.

2) Plug the wire harness into the new LCD info display, back of new stereo and into the factory harness in the car.  Turn the key and test to make sure everything works.

3) If everything works, install the LCD info display/map compartment and secure with 2 screws.

4) Push the stereo into place routing the wires in back so that they don't get in the way or get bent sharply.  Install the 10mm bolt from the glove box to secure the stereo.

5) Re-install the shift plate & cup holders.

6) Enjoy !

  1. What color wires are the CAN+ and CAN- on the stock 2003 harness. I cannot find it, and I am not using the stock stereo. I need those two wires to hook up.

  2. CAN+ = Purple w/ White stripe
CAN- = White w/ Red stripe

    See chart above.

    1. The chart above does "not" represent a 2003-2005 stereo wiring connector. Pins 11,13,15,and 17 do not exist on a 2003 - 2005 wiring harness. They are indeed empty.. I have the 2005 harness and 2005 wiring diagram in front of me. What did you use for the CAN+ and Can- harness from the car if they are in fact not present in the harness?

    2. Those pins are on the radio. This messed me up too. Had a blank display until I thought to try connecting to the radio pins. Worked instantly after doing so. Instructions should be updated to clarify this.

    3. The CAN bus radio pins coming out of the back of the radio on the primary connector or from the bus pins from the Aux/CD connector on the back of the radio?

      Delete
    4. Primary connector. The pin numbers mentioned in the write-up are correct, it's just not clear that the signal actually comes from the radio itself. Using the above instructions precisely, you end up creating a harness that plugs into those pins. I did not make the adapter harness, so I too was confused where to wire the CAN leads into the vehicle. Turns out they actually get their signal from the radio. I think I ended up just jamming the wires into the stock harness plug (with a small amount of exposed wire touching the pin inside) and it has held up for at least 4 months now. If it ever jiggles loose, I'll have to do something more permanent.

    5. thanks Jamie.. that takes a "all" the confusion out of this upgrade/install.. especially after looking at the 2006+ wiring diagrams where there "is" a CAN+/- signal going to the unit..

      Thanks again...

    6. Glad to help. This is a great upgrade for our cars, both functionally and visually. I couldn't stand the look of the silver radio and trim. Much happier with the 06+ radio and shifter trim now. My before and after: https://goo.gl/photos/vNz8bWb1yvYKqC3s7

    7. Nice... I picked up my 6 with a missing radio and a half ass'd metra kit installed so i've been reverse engineering from day one... Does your tablet solution in place of the factory nav system fold away?

      Delete
    8. Ah, sounds like a blast. Mine was luckily unmolested. Keep wanting to ditch the Bose amp and speakers (not loud enough at high speed with the windows open), but it's fine for now. My tablet setup does not fold down, but I thought about modifying it to do so, maybe by hinging the tablet to the lid, then I could fold it back and down. For now, it's easily removed and either stored inside the bin or taken with me if I have any theft concerns. If you are ultra-bored, here's the thread on mazda6club.com of what I've done to my car in the last ~1.8 years of owning it. http://tinyurl.com/gpb894z

    9. Jamie Anton, so for the red female aftermarket harness, do I Repin it the same way as I did with the oem connector that will attach to the back of the 08 radio 24 pin connector?

      Delete
    10. Harold, that sounds correct to me. It has been a while since I did this job so the details are a bit fuzzy. Plus I've since changed to an aftermarket 2-DIN radio with the Metra dash kit, which is its own bag of tricks... Good luck.

  3. My 2007 from never turned up with the HVAC / climate control dials. I apart from the the colour, do you know if they are any different to the 2004 ones? they look identical from what i can see.

    ReplyDelete
  4. For anyone trying this - to save yourself buying 5 OEM harnesses and 3 harness connecters and moving the wires, just buy 1 "FORD/MAZDA PARROT CONVERTOR LEADS" off ebay which contains all the necessary wires and makes this job way easier.

Also if your 2007 head unit doesn't come with the HVAC controls, your old 2004 ones are not compatible.

I have got bose speakers Mazda 6 2005 ts2. I have two lose wires on each end with chrome connectors blue with red stripe and a pink wire. Do I need to connect them somewhere as the pink wire says mute?

  6. Hi, I'm in the process of doing this conversion and this is a great guide. I don't suppose you have the bose amplifier wiring details at all? I'm installing the 6 cd unit and believe it has no internal amp.The speakers and sub are already in but i don't want to mess up when i fit the main unit. Many thanks, Andy.

  7. Do I have to have an 06-08 display or may I use the 03-05 display already in my vehicle? How may I wire that to the harness

    1. I love it, radio looks great and modern. Everything sounds the same as before, all controls work and no the CD does not lose sound on either side. If you are having that problem, it's your CD or the radio.

    2. Sounds like that is what I will be doing then.
And yours was a Bose system too if I recall? Have any pics of the final install with the shift plate back in, and all lights on?

Hard thing is trying to find all those parts.. Which particular model # is the one I should be looking for?
Does that Parrot kit have all the wires I need instead of getting computer case wires?
Any other advice or info would be greatly appreciated!
      Thx and cheers

  11. So have all the parts coming to me as I write, this.. took a while to source them all, but for under $200 for everything.. it is far better than buying one of those Metra kits alone!
I did what Oliver suggested and got that Parrot kit, plus your trick of computer case wires. So as long as everything else shows up in good order, this should be fun.
    Cheers!

  12. I just want to know if i am replacing the stock stereo in my 2004 mazda 6 with an aftermarket stereo and i buy an adapter to connect the original jack to the new stereo, would this affect my lcd screen at all other than the radio functions not displaying on it.

In other words, does the jack that connects to my lcd screen come out of the original harness or is there a seperate port at the back of the original stereo specifically for the jack coming out of the lcd screen?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I have read the guid 5 times and i am planing to do this but is it possible to keep the 2004 radio and only change the display to an 08 one ?

and i still cant figure the connection between the radio connector (white plug) and the car connector (red plug) . for example ports 9,16,14,10 where they should be connected to ?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I also have an 04 6 Wagon w/ Bose, and now I have an 07 stereo with Bose.
His guide is very good, but I used a few other diagram sites as well.. like Crutchfield, and found a few on Mazda6 sites.
I personally bought the "Parrot kit" that Oliver Lewis mentioned above.. that had all the wires I needed already inserted... I got rid of the ones I did not need and basically connected the colors to colors... it worked great! I also used the computer case wires trick IC3Y used.. again worked great!
I reccomend looking online for other wiring diagrams if you can't figure out this one.. it should lead you to the right place for each wire.
As for 9/16/14 and 10.. teh first three are for Steering wheel controls.. don't miss those ones. And 10 controls your amps.
As for keeping the 04 radio and change the display to an 08.. it will not work as he says as there are different pin outs. 16 for an 04 and 10 for an 08.

  19. The subject of Radio OEM and aftermarket repair has been covered intensively by the world press over the past decade. I find myself constantly drawn back to the subject of Radio OEM and aftermarket repair. While it is becoming a hot topic for debate, there are just not enough blues songs written about Radio OEM and aftermarket repair. The juxtapositioning of Radio OEM and aftermarket repair with fundamental economic, social and political strategic conflict draws criticism from the easily lead, trapped by their infamous history.

    1. 1) Verify you installed the same HUD part # as what was in your car. Euro or cars with navigation will not work with your car if it doesn't have navigation, etc.

      2) Verify your wires aren't bent, pinched or shorting out somewhere.

      Good luck !

  31. I am planning to do this swap on my 04 Mazda 6. I know that you spoke extensively above about how to determine which 06-08 stereo to purchase, but there are like seven different options and most listed on Ebay just give a part number. Does anyone know which 06-08 stereo part number I should use for a six disc Bose stereo, with steering wheel controls? Also would it be a six or 7 speaker set up? I am pretty sure it is 7, but don't want to purchase the wrong deck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

      Part numbers:
      GP9A66ARX, GR6G66DSX Radio w/7 speakers

Problem is, finding people that accurately list the part number. There can be 3 different part numbers on the same radio. So odd. I think I found a good one though, just paid for it on ebay! Wish me luck with the install next week...

    1. This would be a huge project. You would need the external Bose amp (goes under the front passenger seat), the Bose speakers for each door, then the Bose subwoofer and amp if you wanted the 7th speaker too. As for the HVAC, you might need to replace the entire unit to have it work with automatic controls rather than manual. You'd honestly be better off trading your car for a newer one with more options! Good luck.

also. if you wanted to add more color to the 06-08 radio face, you can change out the hazard switch, hvac/defroster buttons and even the hvac fan module. I did this the other day and it helps tremendously to be able to find the hazard switch more easily. I never understood why they decided to make everything all one color on the console face.
